A test from xdg-utils asks me if some file appears on my Desktop. On my Desktop, there is a Desktop/ directory which containes that file, this is because I tuned Gnome to assume that ~/ is my Desktop dir, instead of ~/Desktop/ On an out of the box Gnome desktop, ~/Desktop/ is the default Desktop directory, that can be tuned in the gconf boolean key /apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir maybe xdg scripts could use "gconftool-2 -g /apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir" before assuming ~/Desktop/ is the desktop direct ory ?
Fixed for beta4
