I've been experiencing strange crashes for a long time on this hardware since upgrading to xorg-server 1.8, but they were few and far between. The screen would paint itself in a random solid color and become completely unresponsive. Even SysRq+REISUB wouldn't help. The processor seems to be at 100% load, judging by the fan speed. The only solution is a hard reset. With xserver 1.8, I experienced this once or twice a month, now it happens once or twice a day. I'm using Arch Linux x86 with: kernel 2.6.35 intel-dri 7.8.2 xf86-video-intel 2.12.0 The video card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) I don't know how to diagnose this problem further, since the system hangs completely.
The cpu is busy, might be a panic in conjunction with a gfx bug. netconsole is probably the best bet at getting information out when it hangs.
If you attach you dmesg we can look through and see if there are any warning signs before the hang. Do you see any other symptoms during normal usage? Flicker? Stutters? Corruption?
I will as soon as I experience this again. After an update of something (I suspect the kernel), I haven't experienced this for around a week. Maybe the bug is solved. I think there is some corruption with KDE 4.5 kwin's effects, but I think that's another unrelated problem. Other than that, I haven't noticed any artefacts or such.
3 months and no new sighting, so assuming it was fixed by the update. Please reopen if you see it again.
