Your X log indicates DRI is initialized correctly.  What do you mean it fails?

Well that is true DRI claims to be running with glxinfo but if I try to start glxgears all I get is a black box where the window should be and corruption around the rest of the screen. Also looking at the dmesg output, something isn't right, unless those error messages are expected?

Which mesa do you use? If you used a snapshot about 1 week ago, that might be bug#25433, which has been fixed.

It's a bit old. Can you try 7.7-rc2 or the upcoming 7.7 release? 7.6.x should also be a much better choice than 7.5.x.
