Immediately after successfully booting up my computer and logging in in GDM, everything works OK. However, if I switch display modes, mouse cursor becomes invisible. Things still get highlighted when I move mouse cursor over them, but the cursor itself is nowhere to be seen.
Cursor becomes visible again if I do one of the following things:
1) Switch VT to console and back to X.
2) Press CTRL+C on any terminal window.
3) Switch to root user (i.e. "su -") on any terminal window.
Workaround: Disable KMS.

Is this still an issue with a newer kernel?

I cannot say. I no longer have the hardware in question (the machine broke down last december).
