Please check out https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=144624 where I propose a modification to the xkb setup in order to allow one to emulate "Insert" on Apple iBook keyboards that don't have such a key. The thread includes a patch. They have asked me to start this thread here so as to get the ball rolling upstream. X.org is, of course, upstream from Fedora :o) Thanks !
I looked at the patch and do not particularly like the idea. I am trying not to modify standard types unless I really-really need. Would it be possible to assign <INS> to some other key (into unused shift level)?
The iBook keyboard has only one key for destroying text: It's in the upper right corner of the keyboard, below the "F12" key and it's labelled "delete". This key is currently used as follows (fn is a modifier that X is unaware of): delete == Backspace fn + delete == Delete ctrl + alt + delete == Zap IMO the semantics of having "insert" be a modification of "delete", in the absence of any other keys that destroy text are best suited for giving the iBook keyboard "insert" capability: delete == Backspace fn + delete == Delete ctrl + alt + delete == Zap apple + delete == Insert If you feel there is a key better suited for "insert", please have a look at this picture: ftp://tux.go-nix.ca/incoming/iBookG4kbd.gif
Marking broken (status null/blank) bugs in xorg with no activity in a long time as fixed. Please reopen if you think it's necessary, but first do a search if a similar bug report is already filed and in a NEW/ASSIGNED state. These bugs do not currently show in most search results as they do not have any status.
