When the server (ddc EDID) code is not correctly read or missing, the server defaults to 640x480 screen size. The problem is that many users are not able to use the screen tools to fix the problem since they can't find the buttons at the bottom of the app. windows. A sugestion is the make the minimum size 1024x768 as a useful defualt size.
i believe XP's default is 800x600, and at least KDE uses that as their minimum size for UI design. while we're at it we should bump the default color depth to 16bpp.
(In reply to comment #1) > while we're at it we should bump the default color depth to 16bpp. What is the current default color depth ?
8bpp. i humbly suggest that no desktop users actually use 8bpp anymore and are actually confused by this default, as evidenced by a couple of other bugs along the lines of "nv driver displays wrong colors for everything but the active window". vesa and vga should be left alone, but all the accelerated drivers should default to 16bpp.
not just a sun bug.
I think we determined the 640x480 "default" is because the default HSync & VRefresh rates when DDC fails don't allow any higher resolutions - perhaps default HSync ranges of 28-33 and VRefresh of 43-72 are a bit dated?
alanc: the hsync would need to be ramped up a bit, yeah. do we have specs for vga, xga, and whatever, so we can get the default standard works-everywhere-that-does-8x6 modeline?
Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
Fixed in head. The default sync rages now allow for 800x600.
