Description Sebastian Courville 2009-03-08 03:34:45 UTC
After the upgrade from "etch" to "lenny" several weeks ago, xorg is failing sponteneously. It can't be intentionally reproduced. The "error" message indicated looking at the configuration first before filing a bug report; however, it ended with "fatal server error lockup". I've reinstalled xorg, xserver-xorg and all dependencies; but, it's still occurring. I've downgraded to oldstable (because it was working), upgraded to testing, then unstable, with no success. No error messages in the xorg log. Another Debian user and I believe it's the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver. Since the system is useless with no gui, I classified severity as critical and priority as highest. Please help...

I'm new at this. In fact, it's my first bug report.
Comment 1 Gordon Jin 2009-03-08 04:25:53 UTC
Next time when you file bug, you could refer to http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html.

For this one, I think it's likely to be dup with 17638.

Can you try ExaNoComposite?

What's your chipset, 945?
Comment 2 Sebastian Courville 2009-03-08 20:47:23 UTC
"Can you try ExaNoComposite?" Yes, at your request, I am currently trying it.

"What's your chipset, 945?" I believe it's 915.

Has this been working?

Comment 4 Sebastian Courville 2009-04-02 20:21:56 UTC
No, it did not work. Soon afterward, I deleted that partition. I'm using Ubuntu now.

Is this still a problem for you on Ubuntu now?
Comment 6 Sebastian Courville 2009-04-15 10:43:23 UTC
Ubuntu is working fine. I think it's, at least, partly due to the fact it includes the driver, which was eliminated in Debian: i810.

Could you attach Xorg.0.log in Ubuntu, so I could know if this i810 is the try legacy i810, or actually a nickname of the new intel driver.

So the driver version in Ubuntu is 2.2.1, which indicates it's actually intel driver not the legacy i810 driver.

So far the symptom looks similar to bug#17638. But since you can't reproduce it now, I'm closing this.
