I installed openSUSE 11.0 with KDE 4.0 and then upgraded it to KDE 4.1.67 (including kwin KDE window manager). Now during KDE loading I see that login splash screen is shifted and then it suddenly blinks and displays picture like this: http://youonlylivetwice.info/moto_0431.jpg The system hangs completely, I can't switch to ctrl+alt+f# terminal nor do ctrl+alt+bksp. I have intel 915GM/GMS/910GML graphics card, upgrading Xorg from 7.3 to 7.4 didn't help. I solved problem by running failsafe session and turning off kwin compositing. kdm.log contains this backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/Xorg(xf86SigHandler+0x79) [0x80c0b99] 1: [0xffffe400] 2: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(x86_push+0x39) [0xa779bcf9] 3: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(_tnl_generate_sse_emit+0x22a) [0xa773c10a] 4: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so [0xa773aece] 5: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(_tnl_emit_vertices_to_buffer+0x3f) [0xa773b1bf] 6: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so [0xa764be72] 7: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so [0xa764b5a0] 8: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(_tnl_run_pipeline+0x164) [0xa7723824] 9: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so [0xa7687c39] 10: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(_tnl_draw_prims+0x495) [0xa7723d95] 11: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(vbo_exec_vtx_flush+0x2a5) [0xa771c2e5] 12: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(vbo_exec_FlushVertices+0x78) [0xa7717958] 13: /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so(_mesa_MatrixMode+0x161) [0xa76d4dd1] 14: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//extensions/libglx.so [0xb7a501f8] 15: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//extensions/libglx.so [0xb7a78f7f] 16: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//extensions/libglx.so [0xb7a7d80a] 17: /usr/bin/Xorg(Dispatch+0x34f) [0x808b46f] 18: /usr/bin/Xorg(main+0x47d) [0x8070cfd] 19: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe5) [0xb7b205f5] 20: /usr/bin/Xorg(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x229) [0x80700e1] I hope that backtrace will give you a hint. P.S. I also run this software configuration (openSUSE 11.0 + KDE 4.1.67 + XOrg 7.3) on my other notebook - acer aspire one, and it freezes in the same way but only after I used it for some time and/or try to open too many applications. AND it still alows me ctrl+alt+bksp
