On OS X 10.3 during ./configure:

checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
./configure: line 2424: 1.9: command not found
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
