LibreOffice 3.5.0RC1 and RC2 informs there is an update available (as expected) but the dialog box shows a confusing message because it doesn't refer to the RC version: "LibreOffice 3.5.0 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 3.5.0." The best option seems to be the suggested 3.5.0.1, 3.5.0.2, etc to refer to RC1, RC2, etc respectively. This way the expected result should be in the future "LibreOffice 3.5.0.3 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 3.5.0.1."

How situation is today?
The situation is the same as it was 3 months ago. Why do you expect it to be different? The update message currently (checking with 3.5.3RC1) is "LibreOffice 3.5.3 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 3.5.3." Rainer forgot to mark it as NEW and since it is UNCONFIRMED no Dev touched it. I could not have changed the Status even if I was helping with QA at the time because I added the bug...

Will new release version numbering scheme impact this bug in any way? Petr Mladek, Jan Holesovsky: please help to triage this bug and comment (do not hesitate to change its status as needed).
Small improvement: now the update message shows the installed version correctly. "LibreOffice 3.6.1 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 3.6.1.1." However the message still doesn't make sense. Please change the version available to the complete string.
Two versions and two months later "LibreOffice 3.6.3 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 3.6.3.1."
Ten months later... "LibreOffice 4.1.1 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 4.1.1.1."

The last digit is the RC version but it is also the release version. It would make more sense that when you check for an update you get the REAL version which has 4 sections (e.g. 4.1.1.2)

I'd prefer that LibreOffice is only showing 3 digits as this is the way we 'sell' it to the users. But if available and installed version have identical 3 digits, I'd show 4 digits in both numbers--installed and available. This Kelly it readable and logical.

The message has improved but it is still inconsistent. The current message is "LibreOffice 6.2.7 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 6.2.6.2." I do not understand the resistance to showing the same version number that will be displayed on the About dialog (in this case Version: 6.2.7.1)
Please delete my previous comment. The problem persists. When checking from a previous version the message is inconsistent but when checking from RC1 the message is in fact confusing. "LibreOffice 6.2.8 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 6.2.7.1." "LibreOffice 6.2.8 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 6.2.8.1." I think that the suggestion from Thomas Lendo (Comment #16) is in fact a brilliant solution! This means that in the case above you would have "LibreOffice 6.2.8 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 6.2.7" and "LibreOffice 6.2.8.2 is available. The installed version is LibreOffice 6.2.8.1." Both messages make sense and are not confusing!
