Description Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2009-05-06 07:45:07 UTC
Starting X on an Acer Aspire 150Bk (graphics chip 8086:27ae, subsystem 1025:019c) just results in a black screen; tried xf86-video-intel 2.6.3, 2.7 and 2.7.99.1 all with the same effect.

Kernel is 2.6.29, Xserver is 1.6.1.

xrandr shows that it does see the right outputs, even if not displaying anything:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 2048 x 2048
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 222mm x 125mm
   1024x600 60.0*+
   640x480 59.9

Xorg -verbose 9 doesn't show anything unusual:
X.Org X Server 1.6.1

Please upload your xorg log file with modedebug option on as attachment.

pls refer to http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html for how to file a bug...

And, is this a regression, i.e. Has it ever worked before?
Comment 3 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2009-05-07 04:11:52 UTC
It actually works with 2.6.3 and KMS enabled.

2.6.3 with KMS disabled and versions >= 2.7 (both with KMS enabled and disabled) still produce black screens only, will attach more debug output for those.

Unfortunately trying to boot 2.6.30-rc* on the machine causes an instant reboot (probably not related to the graphics chip), so I can't run intel_gpu_dump
Comment 4 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2009-05-07 04:29:45 UTC
2.7.0 with ModeDebug and without KMS causes a crash

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xorg_backtrace+0x37) [0x812f2e7]
1: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so [0xb7c906c8]
2: /usr/bin/X(InitOutput+0x50a) [0x80a824a]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

[Chances are it looked like a black screen before because of problems switching back from graphics mode to text mode]
Comment 5 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2009-05-07 04:31:17 UTC
2.7.0 with KMS crashes with a different (and seemingly totally useless) backtrace

0: /usr/bin/X(xorg_backtrace+0x37) [0x812f2e7]
Comment 6 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2009-05-07 04:49:11 UTC

I use latest driver, 2.7.99 and compiled with modedebug option succesfully.
Could you please answer the Michael's question on comments #2, "Has it ever worked before?" If yes, would you please like doing git bisec on your machine to find which version introduced this regression?

Thanks
Ma Ling

2.6.3+KMS works, 2.7.0+KMS fails - I assume you are using the same kernel during these testing, right? If so, would you be able to help doing some bi-sect? it might provide us some hints..
