Description Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2008-10-12 13:27:42 UTC
Hello,

I am using gentoo for a year now and since the installation, I have masked the xf86-video-i810-2.*.* packages.

Those new drivers are really a problem. When starting X, they turn my screen on and off about five times before X is started. And when I kill X, they simply turn off my monitor and it does not turn on again. I cannot switch to a virtual terminal so I am forced to hard reset. (I am using a laptop).

I would be comfortable with using the old driver forever, but the gentoo guys are removing the driver soon in the future because the upstream is dropping support for them. They say it will not even compile.

I really need to get that issue solved before that happens.

Thanks in advance.
Comment 1 Gordon Jin 2008-10-12 20:23:46 UTC
You didn't tell the exact driver version and your hardware configuration (and apparently this is not a common issue and we're not seeing it). Please provide more info in the bug report, according to http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html.

Please try as newer driver version as you could. 2.5 or 2.4 are preferred.

Let's fix issues one by one. I suppose your major issue is startX, so I'm changing the bug subject to be more accurate.

Ok, I will try to provide all the information.

I have installed gentoo package xf86-video-i810-2.1.1. (This is the not-working one). I did not test the 2.5 and 2.4 versions. I will do so as soon as I can.

Just tried 2.4.2-r2. Same problem.

Comment 6 Jesse Barnes 2008-12-18 13:49:32 UTC
So this is really two issues: VT switch doesn't work and so your display is blank when exiting or switching away from X, and you see more flicker than you'd like when starting up. Is that right?

Does the first issue still occur with a newer X server (like 1.5) and a newer Intel driver (like 2.5.x)?

We're working on the second issue; 2.6.29 will include mode setting control in the kernel, so you'll see one flicker when the kernel starts and that should be it until you reboot or forcibly change to another resolution.

Yeah, that is precisely it! :-)

I will compile the xorg-server-1.5.2 with intel driver 2.5.1 now. I will try to post the results today. Do you have any restrictions on the xorg-x11 package?

Sweet!

When the kernel starts, there is no flicker. It just switches between the standard video mode to uvesafb smoothly.

Now, considering I am using a framebuffer device with precisely the same resolution as the X display, do you mean there will be no flicker when switching from framebuffer to X and vice-versa? Great! Thank you!

Comment 8 Jesse Barnes 2008-12-18 15:04:30 UTC
Ah, you're using uvesafb, that's caused a lot of problems for us. Does your VT switch problem happen without it?

And yeah, once the DRM driver is doing the mode setting, the kernel will boot up, set the native mode (shouldn't have much flicker, if any), and from then on you'll be flicker-free. :)
Comment 9 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2008-12-18 17:13:41 UTC
I just compiled xorg-server 1.5.2 and the 2.5.1 intel driver. I configured the X server with `X -configure`. It simply did not come up. The screen was blank and I could not switch virtual terminals. Still, unlike what happened before, I was able to reboot the machine with CTRL+ALT+DEL. At least I did not have to perform a hard reset.

Here is the log file.

I know for sure it did not work with vesa-tng. I never had X run on my machine without a framebuffer driver. I use text mode too, so I need that eyecandy.

In order to perform your test again, I would have to recompile the server and the kernel and unmask loads of packages once more and resolve some blockers. But if it is really necessary I will do it. Is it? I mean, I thought the framebuffer would have nothing to do with X. Furthermore, when the screen goes blank and I cannot VT switch, not only am I not able to reboot via CTRL+ALT+DEL, it is also impossible to let acpid halt the computer by pressing the power button. If it was just the framebuffer not comming up, these stuff would not be happening, I think.

Great! I will wait eagerly for the 2.6.29 kernel release and for gentoo to make xorg-xserver-1.5.2 x86 stable.

Thanks again.

This is a weird place to crash. Any way you could get a more complete backtrace? It seems like maybe the installation was wrong, or there are mismatched modules (like the server & driver or something).

The problem is that uvesafb (and any other video driver) will program the GPU however it wants. Then when X starts it has to make sure it can save and restore whatever state the GPU was in when it started. The more drivers we have to support before X starts, the harder that gets. Right now we can only really handle vesafb and plain text, and even then sometimes there are problems. This is one of the main reasons we're moving all the mode setting, memory management, and command execution into the kernel.

Well, what I did was unmasking xorg-server 1.5.2 and xf86-video-intel-2.5.1. Then I kept unmasking packages portage told me to. In the end I solved some blocks and that was it. Gentoo did the complete install for me. I just did `X -configure` and copied xorg.conf over.

I see, thanks for the explanation.

Still, xorg-server-1.3.0 with xf86-video-intel-1.7.4 do switch back and forth from uvesafb graciously, as they did with vesafb-tng. I do not see how it would stop working with the upgrade.

But ok, I will try. But just tell me something. Is it ok if I upgrade only the video driver and stop calling uvesafb from the kernel command line or do I have to recompile the kernel without uvesafb and upgrade the whole xserver?

You should be able to run w/o an xorg.conf altogether these days.

The 1.7.4 driver does things much differently from the 2.x series, there are a few places where problems could have crept in.

I think booting w/o the uvesafb stuff on the kernel boot line should be sufficient.
Comment 13 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2008-12-19 04:46:04 UTC
I once tried to get rid of xorg.conf, but I get more flicker and synaptics does not work.

I booted without frame buffer (tux still appeared at the top). The behaviour was exactly the same as with uvesafb. Lots of flickering. This time I was able to VT switch successfully (with one flicker). However, with uvesafb I occasionally could (like 2 in 5 times). I am sure if I repeated the experiment it would crash again.

By the way, this time the log had more errors than the first log I posted (checked with diff).

Your log looks fine actually. Were you able to reproduce the hangs/blank screen w/o uvesafb? Also can you try the "EXA" accelmethod in your xorg.conf? And please attach logs in the future, it makes the bugs easier to follow (don't have to scroll through huge amounts of output to see comments).

Well, the problem is that it does not always happen. I am sometimes able to avoid hanging while using uvesafb. When I turned it off, the results were the same, the only difference being that it, in that specific try, did not hang. However I was quite sure it would do so if I kept trying. I know this information is vague, sorry.

Well, I never tried using the new xorg server without dri enabled. I will try it soon. But I must ask: is it enough to upgrade the video driver or should I upgrade the server too?

(Sorry, I will attach the logs in the future.)

Comment 16 Jesse Barnes 2009-01-06 14:41:31 UTC
It should be enough to just update the driver, since you're already using 2.5.1 you should just try the git tree. You'll probably also have to update libdrm though, even if you leave the server alone.

All right, I will compile it now but I will only be able to test it tomorrow for I am running some stuff now and cannot reboot.

Ah, by the way, gentoo does not pull in a libdrm upgrade. Is that ok?

Comment 18 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2009-01-06 15:31:14 UTC
Nevermind the libdrm stuff, it was pulled in, sorry.

Comment 19 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2009-01-07 07:14:32 UTC
Ok, I performed the test a few minutes ago.

This time, without uvesafb and with the new driver plus EXA, X did not even start. It went black and I was forced to hard reset. This time there is no log since X did not output one.

This has already happened to me with the new driver but no uvesafb or EXA, but it was extremely rare.

I guess this just strenghtens my hypothesis that uvesafb is not to blame.

Comment 20 Helge Bahmann 2009-01-18 23:53:41 UTC
Since you also have an 855GM, does the patch attached to bug#19603 fix your problem as well?
Comment 21 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2009-01-19 04:49:24 UTC
It seems it will. Based on that bug's comments, I was actually wrong and it is uvesafb's fault. However, I can say the flickering will continue since I already tried it without a framebuffer.

Still, I will not be able to try it out until this weekend/next week. But as soon as I do that, I will post the results.

if you only see a couple of flicker during resolution change, i would say this is a known behavior for current driver.. this bug should be closed then. thanks.

X error log for patched xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 driver
Comment 24 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2009-01-24 11:49:24 UTC
I patched the driver, compiled and installed it and then I started X.

For my surprise, X did not start. It just came back to the console and threw the error below on me (I inlined it because I thought its size does not deserve the attaching overhead).

The log says something about no driver being found and thus X was not able to detect any screen.

This was probably a newbie error of mine, so I already apologise.

Uh, sorry for that!

I will try again today.

Comment 27 Luís Fernando Schultz Xavier da Silveira 2009-01-25 13:17:24 UTC
It worked OK. There were lots of flickering (about 3) on startup and one flicker each time I switched to/from a virtual terminal.

So I guess most of it was correct. Still, there was one bizarre thing. I use gkrellm, and when I loaded it with the new driver, the colors were different! There are some monitors which are somewhat red, namely the CPU and HDD temperature and the uptime. Normally, they are the same colors as the background of graphs or other meters, such as the memory one. I attached a picture.

This ought not to be a serious thing, but is the only difference I noticed. And that is special because it did not happen with the non patched driver.

I also attached the log, if you find that useful.

Comment 32 Jesse Barnes 2009-01-26 10:28:29 UTC
Ok, sounds like the initial flicker is just the normal mode setting display switching, and the VT switch bug sounds identical to 19603 so I'm marking it as a DUP (we'll get something like Helge's patch applied so that things work).
