Created attachment 19504 [details] Xorg.0.log from a regular boot, where it fails with brown screen I'm forwarding this bug from a Ubuntu reporter: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/279450 Problem: After logging in via the gdm screen, the X session does not come up - it shows a blank (brown) screen. The mouse works okay and the session can be exited via ctrl-alt-backspace. Tested: * Hardy (xserver 1.4.x, -intel 2.2.1-x) - Works properly * Intrepid/gdm (xserver 1.5.1, -intel 2.3.1) - Fails with issue * With/without compiz - Fails with issue * Creating a new user and using it - Fails with issue * Intrepid/startx - This stopped loading with a sort of highly pixelated black and white background (almost grey because the pixelation was so dense). * Using the "gdm failsafe" mode - Works properly
Created attachment 19505 [details] Xorg.0.log from a gdm failsafe run, where it is working properly Note that this failsafe uses the -intel driver. (Specifying "vesa" as the driver did not work - it gave a "No valid modes" error. Probably requires additional xorg.conf configuration.)
>> * Intrepid/gdm (xserver 1.5.1, -intel 2.3.1) - Fails with issue But the log says it's using -intel 2.4.1?

Sorry, typoed that; I meant 2.4.1. Bryce
I'm the original reporter of the bug in Launchpad, so just subscribing here in case anything's needed from me. Thanks, Tom
Looking at the referenced launchpad entry it sounds like this was a session manager issue. Marking "invalid" to indicate it probably wasn't an xf86-video-intel bug.
