Slovenian GUI, showing not enough space at the bottom
Slovenian GUI, several strings cut
Load/Save - General page (English)

Description Mihkel Tõnnov 2013-07-23 18:32:29 UTC
Some translated strings at the Options dialog won't fit, because the allocated room for them only allows for ~10...20% length increase compared to English originals. But for several languages (Estonian, Finnish, German, French, to name a few), translated strings are often longer than that, and thus get chopped off at the end. Cases in point are listed below.

Options - Load/Save - General, key ID YS72Z:
en: _Edit document properties before saving
et: _Enne salvestamist muudetakse dokumendi o<chop here>madusi
fi: _Muokkaa asiakirjan ominaisuuksia ennen tallennusta
fr: Éditer les propriétés du document _avant l'enregistrement

VqGoW:
en: Save URLs relative to file system
et: Failisüsteemi URL-ide salvestamine suhtelise<chop here>na
fi: URL-osoitteen tallennus suhteessa tiedostojärjestelmään
fr: Enregistrer les URL relatifs au système de fichiers

AFFdp:
en: Save URLs relative to internet
et: Interneti URL-ide salvestamine suh<chop here>telisena
fi: URL-osoitteen tallennus suhteessa internetiin
fr: Enregistrer les URL relatifs à internet

Options - LibreOffice - View, 4iRsE:
en: Use system _font for user interface
et: Süsteemse _fondi kasutamine kasutajal<chop here>iideses
fi: Käytä käyttöliittymässä _järjestelmän fonttia
de: Syst_emschriftart für die Benutzeroberfläche verwenden
fr: _Utiliser la police système pour l'interface utilisateur

The above regressed sometime during 4.1 (or maybe 4.0) cycle, i.e. during conversion to the new dialog style or whatsitcalled (they are all fine in 3.6); the one below is older (chopped already in 3.6).

Options - LibreOffice Writer - Table, n6Bf9:
en: Fi~xed, proportional
et: ~Kindel, proportsionaa<chop here>lne
(fi, de, fr fit)

There are probably others, these just caught my eye in Estonian l10n.

The common denominator here is that they all occur in places where there are two columns in the layout of the dialog.

Slovenian is affected as well, some examples:

Options - LibreOffice - View:
Spreminjanje mer is cut off instead of "Spreminjanje merila"
"Velikost in slok ik" is cut off instead of "Velikost in slog ikon"
"Samodejn" with half of an O at the end instead of "Samodejno"

Options - LibreOffice - Personalization
"Izberite temo." instead of "Izberite temo ..."

Options - Load/Save - General
at the end "Always Save As:" / "Vedno shrani kot:" is cut in half, only upper part of the line/charaters is shown!

Options- Language Settings - Checking English Sentences
the option "Pretvorba v metrske enote (C, km/h... is cut at the end

Same with croatian.

Could one of you add a screenshot of the problem, this sounds like it is
 a duplicate to bug 61544?

I must correct one instance, the Personalization is a bug in translation, it should be "Izberite temo", the dot got in somehow. I am also attaching screenshots.
I report this on RC3 and RC4 of LO410!

Yikes, very bad in Gaelic.

D_easaich roghainnean na sgrìobhainne mus nithear<chopped>sàbhaladh
_Cruthaich lethbhreac-glèidhidh an-cò<chopped>mhnaidh
Sàbhail URLaichean dàimheach ri siostam nam faidh<chopped>lichean
Sàbhail URLaichean dàimheach ris an<chopped>eadar-lìon

I'm sure it didn't used to be like that. I don't think this is a duplicate of the other bug, that one talks about re-sizable windows, these are fixed size.

This is also happening in English as well. Most noticeable inside Load/Save - General. I can see the option to choose document type but can see the next option to choose which program type to auto save in.

The screenshot at attachment 82925 [details] illustrates bug 61544, so I'm obsoleting it here.

Sérgio Marques wrote that this is happening with Portuguese as well (using 4.1.0 RC4): http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/l10n/msg06500.html

Copying the problematic strings here, too:

Icon _size and style
Tamanho e e_stilo dos ícones

Use system _font for user interface
Utilizar letra do sistema para a inter_face do utilizador

Options -> LibreOffice Calc -> View
Grid lines
Linhas da ~grelha

Options -> LibreOffice Writer -> Autocaption -> Caption
Numbering separator
Separador de numeração

Hi, same problems here for Italian version, I tested only for Windows 7 but I suppose it is the same in Linux.

LibreOffice 4.0.1.4

With the ongoing UI conversion and following fix of fdo#61544 (put in See Also), any update with 4.2.6 or 4.3.0?

For Estonian localisation, these are all fixed (tried on Linux and Win7). I don't have time to try the other locales, but since the layout seems really better now, I hope they are OK too. Please test if you can. Marking as resolved.
