[Problem]
Internal LCD display shows bad corruption; external monitor works okay.

[Original Report]
intrepid 8.10 alpha 6
dell inspiron 2600, intel 830m graphics

Internal LCD display is completely corrupt and unusable with default xorg.conf. Can use an external monitor.

Had the same problem under Hardy and had to specify "i810" driver in xorg.conf though this doesn't seem to work now.

Then booted karmic alpha 2 i386 desktop livecd with acpi=off and noapic

still lots of corruption on internal LCD. External monitor works OK with some flickering

The log says:
[drm] failed to load kernel module "i915"
(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for

Can you check the configuration?
Comment 3 Bryce Harrington 2009-07-07 01:01:04 UTC
I think it's unlikely to be a configuration error in this case, since I had the user test off of a Karmic LiveCD of Alpha-2.

Rather, I suspect the issue has more to do with this being an i830 card. I've been noticing a disproportionate number of the people reporting that the latest -intel isn't working are using i830 or other pre-i855 cards. I'm guessing these use a different set of code which simply isn't as well tested?
Comment 4 Gordon Jin 2009-07-07 19:25:27 UTC
You are right, we don't have 830. (The only 8xx chipset I validate is 855GM)

Please attach the full dmesg.

Comment 6 Bryce Harrington 2009-07-07 23:13:02 UTC
The user has confirmed they booted with a stock xorg.conf with no modifications.
Comment 7 Eric Anholt 2009-08-03 09:50:04 UTC
What does lsmod say? Is i915 loaded?
Comment 8 Eric Anholt 2009-10-19 13:47:51 UTC
Closing due to feedback timeout.

Also, the dmesg doesn't appear to correspond to the Xorg.0.log.
