xterm renders correctly; metacity and gnome-appereance-properties are corrupted.

starting with 23d1df22d177e54bfc46304053d8115047ff85d4 (Abstract surface setup into a separate function.) gtk applications don't render correctly. See the attached screenshot. I can have the fonts rendered correctly by setting 'Rendering: Monochrome' in gnome-appearance-properties, but everything else stays corrupted no matter what I do.
