The following patch written [1] by Arjan van de Ven rewrites the xorg scheduler to improve scheduling performance and thereby decreasing the amount of wakeups per second. 

I have tested this and haven't detected any negative consequences of using it, please review and consider for mainline adoption.

There actually was a bug with it, it broke operation without the smart scheduler.
