My system boots in 1024x768, when it could (and should) boot in 1280x960. I have to use xrandr in window manager startup files to set higher resolution. GDM loads in 1024x768. To have 1280x960 available I have had to remove sync rates, and all display sections from xorg.conf. Chipset is Intel 865G, monitor is NEC 771sb.

I have the same problem, described in detail on https://bugs.gentoo.org/176501.
There you can find logs, config and xrandr output for both working 1.7.4 and broken 2.0.0. If you want me to, I can attach them here as well.

An interesting thing to note is that changing the mode using Ctrl+Alt+Plus and Ctrl+Alt+Minus won't work either.

Can you try with a more recent driver and no xorg.conf (just rename it to xorg.conf.old or something)?  Maybe your display isn't being detected properly.

Frank, I don't think it's a bug if it's working with those stuff removed from xorg.conf. The new intel driver don't need those settings as before.

Martin, I suggest you to remove xorg.conf as well, specifically VideoRam is not needed. Please open a seperate bug if you can still reproduce with the latest driver with no xorg.conf.

Tried that, makes things even worse, i.e. even lower initial resolution.

I have that already commented out in my current xorg.conf.

Reproduced with driver 2.1.1 and opened bug 12542 for this.
