Creating footnotes LO 3.4.0 crashes if following three conditions are met: 1) Using templates from the period 2005-2009 (newer templates do not cause problems). 2) The counting of footnotes is "per page". 3) Footnotes are inserted in a unilateral document or in a multi-page document on the last page. Note: in Libo 3.3.2 the problem does not appear.
Could well have the same root cause as bug#37974
Created attachment 47690 [details] Attachement [1]: Test file with footnotes to reproduce the crash
LibO 3.4.0 crashes if trying to open a document with above three conditions created under older versions of LibO/OOo. - Attachement [1]
RC2 is bit by bit identical with release version, so separate items in the version picker are useless. Changes have been discussed with Michael Meeks.

Created attachment 48684 [details] Two footnotes in a single paragraph passing to the next page - starts the recovery process I decided to write here, because it is associated with this bug. 1. Open the odt document with footnotes (two footnotes in a single paragraph passing to the next page) 2. Close it. 3. Reopen starts the recovery process every time. The problem appears in 3.4. Series 33 is free from it.
Manfred J. Krause reported on the "de-discuss" [1] that the above mentioned crash can also be reproduced with LibO 3.4.1 release, but not with the dayly build [2]. After installation of the same build under Windows XP, I can confirm that there is no more any crash. [...] Detailed: ['libreoffice-3-4~2011-07-08_09.49.19_LibO_3.4.1rc1_Win_x86_install_en-US_de_fr.exe' (on WinXP 32b)] 1. 'TEST_Crash_Fussnoten_einseitiges_Dokument.odt - Test file with footnotes to reproduce the crash' now works fine with a.m. dev build [see Comment #3]. - FILEOPEN without crash - Adding a further footnote works fine 2. 'zus_zla_xxx.odt - file crashing LO3.4' now works fine with a.m. dev build [see Comment #5 and duplicate bug 38291]. - FILEOPEN without crash - Adding a further footnote works fine 3. Similar own templates/documents (with the conditions 1) to 3) from Description) work fine. 4. 'LO3.4_recovery_the_document_with_footnotes.odt - Two footnotes in a single paragraph passing to the next page - starts the recovery process [see Comment #6]. (That test document has the different footnotes settings 'counting: per document'.) - Closing the file still crashes LibO - Reproducible with own text documents (.odt) @Tor: "Could well have the same root cause as bug#37974" - I've tested the "speculative fix" by Caolán McNamara [see 'Bug 37974 - crash when inserting footpage notes'] with LibO 3.4.1 release, and that works well now. But the bugfix did not have any effect on this bug 38052. Since you've been involved in this bug here, maybe you might have again a look at the problem. Created attachment 48985 [details] Closing the sample text document crashes LibO 3.4.1 (In reply to comment #6) > Created an attachment (id=48684) [details] > Two footnotes in a single paragraph passing to the next page - starts the > recovery process > > I decided to write here, because it is associated with this bug. > > 1. Reopen starts the recovery process every time. > > The problem appears in 3.4. > Series 33 is free from it. The sample document and the bug seems to be different to the original bug report. The result is even worse. 1. Different footnotes setting 'counting: per document' 2. The bug can also occur in the middle of a document, where a paragraph with two footnotes and automatic page break exists. See attached sample file: 'two_footnotes_one_paragraph_page_break.odt'. Closing the text document crashes LibO 3.4.1. [File created and tested with LibO 3.4.1 release]
Same here: when changing footnotes from "per document" to "per page" [1] LibreOffice 3.4.1 crashes instantly on both Linux (Gentoo) and Windows XP. [1] Tools -> Footnotes/Endnotes -> Footnotes tab -> Counting -> Per Page -> OK I can attach a sample document if needed.
@David: The initially reported bug--counting of footnotes 'per page'--does not occur anymore (seems to be fixed) in LibO 3.4.2 RC1 (RESOLVED WORKSFORME). But it still remains the different problem, mentioned in Comment #6, and in Comment #9.
The initially reported bug--counting of footnotes 'per page'--does not occur anymore (seems to be fixed) in LibO 3.4.2 RC1/RC2. Bug 39447 is the correct bug report for the different problem "Two footnotes in a single paragraph passing to the next page - starts the recovery process" (see Comment #6). @Paweł Talacha: Maybe you want to add a comment / an attachment to bug 39447
